Well, still in Schweich………

June 27th.

Well, what can we say???, another 3 weeks further on from last blog and we are still in Schweich..

We have waited, been teased with short visits from mechanics, had bits fiddled with and bits put in, and taken out. Ideas as to why water getting into engine,,, oil, diesel & water sprayed all over the cabin ceiling, ( started engine with all injectors removed!!)  Holes drilled in unusual places, black water tank pump changed to actually pump out efficiently and not occasionally suck in ( courtesy of H2O, St Jean,)  the list goes on, and on.

BUT    We amused ourselves by driving to Metz to catch up with Jan and Bill for the day, and chance meeting with other OZ boatie friends, Peter and Jayne we had met before.  I have even spent 2 days recovering some of the dinette squabs!!! ..BUT best of all we even had a day, driving through Luxembourg to visit a Belgium Decathalon store (biggest sports store ever), IKEA, and then into France for a Bricolage…(Mitre 10) … now that’s boredom………………

Modelling the lasted fashion gear, (just need a canoe) and take your dog shopping.

Waiting for Chris and Judy Ingram to arrive. Luckily they are boaties so they just adapted to the flow. We did take them out for a trial run for 3 hours so at least they got out on the Moselle.

And view of the marina, that in last blog was 3 feet under flood water, now you can just see the quay wall through the water.

The flood water has yet to totally recede and settle.

And a new form of motorbike ( BMW ) bit like a rocket!!

Next day trip to Volklinger Ironworks, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

Built 1873, then in 1890 it became the biggest steel girder producer in German Empire. In 1944 the Ironworks and auxilliary operations employed over 12,000 foreign workers (majority forced labour ).   In 1965 they employed 17,000 workers and as the steel crisis hit in 1975, it was finally closed down in 1986.

Incredible place, you could still really feel the heat and noise the huge furnaces would have made, and the smell of dust, tar, coal and rusting steel still really evident. its hard to  believe that people still worked in places like this in the 80’s.
