OK, so now back to Schweich!!

Finally on the water again.

Weather looking promising as we head up through Trier and up to Luxembourg, where you can buy diesel for 25% less. So as we bought over 500litres that is a big saving.

Past Wasserbillig that now looks nice and calm 5 weeks after the floods.DSCN4698IMG_0736

We are a little concerned at the amount of green on the vines from the rain, and the tiny size of the grapes!!!

Still getting good sunsets.

DSCN4724 - CopyDSCN4747

Still some bloody big boats around even now we have come back down the Moselle  again from Luxembourg and swung up the Saar river towards France.

DSCN4733

Passed through Mettlach where we managed to sneak into the Villaroy and Boch China factory shop and come out empty handed.

IMG_0920IMG_0921

This is also the place (only 40 mins by car from Schweich), that after 3 days of leaving, and paying the bill, we have to call and send Christoph videos so he can come back to  look at the diesel slick and smoke the engine is still making. We have to admit, he and the diesel specialist turned up the next morning and told us to try running for 50 hrs. Obviously a pie in the sky hope , so we continued up towards Sarreguemines to celebrate Bastille Day on French soil.

DSCN4774DSCN4773

At 22.45pm boats starting coming up river, covered in lights, bleating horns sounding like cockerals, and weaving all over the place… couldnt swear any of them were sober!! then the fire works. As usual the French towns do it so well with fun fairs, music and food stalls.

DSCN4792DSCN4795

Of course it absolutetly bucketed down during the evening and the next morning this was the inside and outside temp. My lady is fully clothed!!!DSCN4805DSCN4808

Then the next morning we hear about the City of Nice… From what we heard most celebrations planned for the weekend were cancelled in respect for the people who suffered.. When will this senseless behaviour end???

On our way we past over a Km of cyclists, all in similar coloured lycra ?? going where??

DSCN4816DSCN4818

So now we head back to Schweich to find out the plan for Kiwi rose… of course Max and I speculated madly about it, (and we know some much about diesel engines!!)

                                               Yehh Right !!

Off back down the Saar , and at least its down stream now. Stopped again in Mettach and decided to buy a Christmas souvinir and visit the Villaroy and Boch Museum.

DSCN4838DSCN4834

All the setting set out so nicely, but the shop was bloody expensive,,, oh if we had the money!!!  But wouldn’t it have been great to travel with luggage like this in the  20-30’s .IMG_0981IMG_0982 DSCN5984DSCN4827

As we leave we spot this turtle, sunning itself, and a paddle-boarder trying to use our wake to go faster!!

SO, SO SO,  A Long story short about the engine…. We initially got water into the engine through the exhaust.( another long story)  Buggered up the pistons, 5 & 6,. So engine was taken out of the boat last winter, and taken away and reconditioned. It was put back in in March and trialled and worked beautifully.

Unfortunately the water issue wasn’t dealt with until after a few trail runs out on the water, so in the meantime water has re-entered the engine and buggered the pistons again.

IMG_0991

After taking the engine apart in the boat and the blind hope that we might NOT have to take the engine out, its still got to come out again.

Rather than sit around on a useless boat, in a place we haven’t chosen to be, and have already been in for 12 weeks, we have decided to head back to UK. Time frame is around 3 weeks, and as we have leased our flat out till September we are scrounging beds of friends etc .

I would have liked to have seen the engine coming out of the boat, ( a forklift through the window, etc etc) but Max is glad to be going.

So we head off this morning to the Eurotunnel to home. We should be able to still get Kiwi Rose up to Maastricht for the winter as planned, just our time on the boat will run later into the year.

Leaving Schweich, after 8 weeks!!!

July 8th.

OK, so todays the day………. we are sailing out of Schweich.  We will post this as we leave !!      YES,, YES,  YES.        Weather looking better, best day ever yesterday with 26, and blue skies.  Had a good last night with drinks and meal with new Aussie neighbours Mel and Dave from Perth.

We think our boat might have separation anxiety!!    Or we might!!

So to catch up,

Last week, Lucy had a lovely 4 day trip back to UK, catching up with good nursing friends from NZ for lunch.IMG_0875 Elizabeth and Pip.

Caught up with Claire and bestest friend Kate Hughes for supper in town. They are loving London.

IMG_0879   And old school friends, Jo Waters, (Paris), Sue May, (NZ), and Annie & Yazmin in Chichester.

IMG_0899IMG_0900IMG_0898

And I saw my sister Julia, and did actually get done what I went to do in the first place!!.

Arrived back Friday night to Schweich, to a very depressed Max. Still nothing happening on the boat front except promises. Quick call from Min & Bill Jennings who are stuck on their boat in Calais where its raining & locks broken so closed for few days. This lifts our spirits…and they drive up and save us.

As you can see, weather still cold.  Another quick sightseeing trip into Trier, a noddy train ride and a beer/wine.. Nice day.

Progress on the boat at last, and Bill & Min get to experience the penthouse suite with views as we have to stay up on the hard for a night.

DSCN5961DSCN5965

Slight issue, black water tank is no problem, but the washing up water had be be dealt with… HE HE HE  ( always helps if you stand under to right hole)

DSCN4654DSCN4658

DSCN4663

So back in water the next day.. All looks good. Weather is getting better, still stormy clouds but warmer and some sun.

We now wait for Max to negotiate what we owe with Christoph.Fingers crossedFingers crossed

They have done good work, but timing, organisation and communication really haven’t impressed us…Max has had the patience of a saint,  ( and I haven’t, always wanting to storm up to the yard and hassle them ). Max did feel like a stalker in the end, up there most days trying to get an idea of days and times but not always getting anywhere.

So over winter they took the engine out of the boat,( and they now tell us they also had to pop a window out to lever the engine back in!!,), its been reconditioned and the water in engine issue has been resolved. We have done water trials and had the leak from the depth sounder sorted. They did a few other things for us as well, like water pump, valve on hot water tank, new bathroom tap, etc etc   Still, it’s all over now….

(Who said H2O were bad ??)  The more we hear from people, the more we believe its a universal boat yard/mechanics diseased mentality..

Wednesday 6 July 2016

Well, still in Schweich………

June 27th.

Well, what can we say???, another 3 weeks further on from last blog and we are still in Schweich..

We have waited, been teased with short visits from mechanics, had bits fiddled with and bits put in, and taken out. Ideas as to why water getting into engine,,, oil, diesel & water sprayed all over the cabin ceiling, ( started engine with all injectors removed!!)  Holes drilled in unusual places, black water tank pump changed to actually pump out efficiently and not occasionally suck in ( courtesy of H2O, St Jean,)  the list goes on, and on.

BUT    We amused ourselves by driving to Metz to catch up with Jan and Bill for the day, and chance meeting with other OZ boatie friends, Peter and Jayne we had met before.  I have even spent 2 days recovering some of the dinette squabs!!! ..BUT best of all we even had a day, driving through Luxembourg to visit a Belgium Decathalon store (biggest sports store ever), IKEA, and then into France for a Bricolage…(Mitre 10) … now that’s boredom………………

Modelling the lasted fashion gear, (just need a canoe) and take your dog shopping.

IMG_0806IMG_0804

We have had lovely weather and crap weather!!!

DSCN4547DSCN4552

Waiting for Chris and Judy Ingram to arrive. Luckily they are boaties so they just adapted to the flow. We did take them out for a trial run for 3 hours so at least they got out on the Moselle.

DSCN5835DSCN5838

Only the second time Max has allowed me to pour away wine that is really bad!!( 2 euros),

Max bought this Skinos Mastiha Liqueur from duty free in Greece, cos he liked the bottle!!

DSCN5841

Chris wasn’t impressed with it at all. and labelled it the worst stuff he had ever tasted……and that saying something!!!!!   Embarrassed smileEmbarrassed smile

Managed a couple of trips to Trier, to see the Historic Roman Hertitage, The Amphitheatre, Catheredral,The amazing Porta Nigra, (The City Gate).. all dating back to around  200 AD.

Trip on river, and the vines being attended to.

DSCN5908DSCN5911

And of course watching rugby,  Max through other Kiwis over here has found a site that he can stream line all games LIVE on his Ipad.!!!

DSCN5919DSCN5921

Lovely weather to sit outside for a evening beer !!!

DSCN5924DSCN5927

Other 2 day trips out, ( going boat stir crazy)

Cocham and Burg Eltz which we have visited before so knew its would be worth it.

I am modelling the lastest in German trouser braces  that serve the mans greater purpose…beer holders.DSCN4613

And view of the marina, that in last blog was 3 feet under flood water, now you can just see the quay wall through the water.

The flood water has yet to totally recede and settle.

And a new form of motorbike ( BMW ) bit like a rocket!!

Cochen-12DSCN4553

Cochem under flood 3 weeks ago and the quay last summer with us. This week the boat in the picture had mooring ropes going everywhere, even to submerged bollards.

And a quick drive inland to visit the fairy tale Burg Etlz..

 IMG_0969

Next day trip to Volklinger Ironworks, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

Built 1873, then in 1890 it became the biggest steel girder producer in German Empire. In 1944 the Ironworks and auxilliary operations employed over 12,000 foreign workers (majority forced labour ).   In 1965 they employed 17,000 workers and as the steel crisis hit in 1975, it was finally closed down in 1986.

Incredible place, you could still really feel the heat and noise the huge furnaces would have made, and the smell of dust, tar, coal and rusting steel still really evident. its hard to  believe that people still worked in places like this in the 80’s.
