Mayrhofen, Tirol. Austria, Jan 2013.

We had a absolutely fantastic week skiing in Mayrhofen. The expanse of slopes is incredible. They have these trackers on your lift passes so you can go on line and view your days skiing.

On one day when we went with a guide, we skied a total of 126 kms of which 68kms was actually skiing on pistes. Needless to say max couldn’t ski for the next 2 days because his hips were so sore.

 

 

Night life—well Mayrhofen seems like the apres-ski capital of the world. Night life is madness, and you even buy your shots by the yard in these special wooden trays.

Also why buy a small beer when you can buy a litre at a time.

And Natalie, the chalet host.

We booked a group chalet and HB so we would meet people in the evening. Well we had a group of 16 guys from Birmingham , a mixture of firemen, a punk band manager, engineers and just good blokes, and the other 7 were from Newcastle, (the girls old friends, all initally paramedic) . At least they had 5 women in the group or Lucy would have felt a bit left out. And boy, could they all party as well. Made us look slow.!!.

Lunches on the mountain, yum yum and cheapish too.

Side trip to Oostvoorne, Holland Jan 2013

Max accompanied Bill to Oostvoorne for a few days in January to help him do some work on his boat.  John and Maureen from Hull had also decided to go out there at the same time…

Shit, was it cold!!!!!!!

But these boats all have central heating with radiators, so life is pretty pleasant if you don’t open the doors..

This part of the marina is usually full of small boats in the summer and now just frozen over. Last year more of the marina was frozen and they even moved the cafe tables onto the ice, and the kids skated around people while you drank shots and coffee to keep warm.me.

Temp dropped  –19 on one night, and was about –6 to –11 the rest of them.-

XMAS DAY and such a pretty lot we are !!!!!!

SKIING in the Jungfrau area,  just amazing views and acres and acres of pistes.

Top of the Jungfrau, 3500m high.  The train track/tunnel was carved out in 1869 and took 16 years to complete. It was opened in 1912 and it is Europes highest altitude railway station. The railway tunnel cuts through the Eiger and Jungfrau and emerges at the top of Jungfrau. Stunning views over the Alps. The trip on the train through the tunnel quite inspiring. Built with Italian labour. Health and Safety wouldn’t allow you to do it today.

NEW YEAR EVE 2012-13

Decided we should go night taboganing then stop at a restaurant down,the Jungfrau and have a fondue.,

Oh happy days!!!    Waiting to catch the train up the mountain to the start line.
